Informer planted as decoy customer, plays key role in arrest

Sleuths from the detection team of the Pydhonie police station, last week, busted drug dealer Sabir Ali Abdul Kadar Lohani from Carnac Bunder, where he had supposedly come to deliver a consignment.

Lohani, unemployed, was found in possession of 520 grams of charas (also known as hash or hashish) amounting to Rs. 52,000 after an informer was sent by the cops as a decoy customer, who confirmed that Lohani had the contraband substance on him at that time.

On February 8 this year, the men in khakhi had received prior information that Lohani had over half-a-kilo and would come to the Reti Bunder area to either deal or sell it to a customer. In the wee hours, the team’s informer confirmed this and after that the team nabbed him from outside Balgi Hotel. Upon interrogation, the 55-year-old resident of Darukhana, Reti Bunder confessed to his crime.

The team’s ‘khabri’ informer, had intimated them and even made a couple of rounds to where Lohani had arrived. He had surveyed the place before and even posed as a decoy customer to ascertain the quantity and the price of the narcotic substance. After gathering information, the confirmed tip-off was provided to the police, who picked up an unsuspecting Lohani.

The team comprising of assistant Police Inspector Rahul Bhandare, Police Sub-Inspector Swapnil Shinde, Police Inspector Naik Shewate, Head constable Mujawar and constable Sanap under the guidance and leadership of Senior Inspector Avinash Kanade managed to arrest the peddler after laying a trap.

Lohani was booked under Sections 8 (c) (produce, manufacture, possess, sell, purchase, transport, warehouse, use, consume any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance, except for medical or scientific purposes) and 20 of the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act, 1985 and is currently lodged in South Mumbai’s high security Arthur Road Jail.

The police, in the meanwhile, are also trying to ascertain if he was a part of some gang, executing the task at someone’s behest or dealt with contraband substances independently.
