Commuters walk through a nullah to reach Mankhurd Railway station

In a rather pathetic revelation, the residents of Annabhau Sathe Nagar in Mankhurd have to choose between traversing a heavy traffic filled highway or a dirty wet nullah to get to their nearest railway station. The wooden bridges that once were over the nullah were demolished by the BMC in a recent cleanup drive and have not been replaced.

The ten-minute walk is a filthy reminder of the failures of our civic system.

While big schemes are announced for setting up smart cities by the Government, the situation is not at all that encouraging going by the fact that in the absence of a bridge, residents of Annabhau Sathe Nagar are forced to trudge through a nullah to reach Mankhurd railway station.

According to MNS leader Ravi Gavas, earlier there were two wooden bridges connecting this area to the railway station. However, during the recent nullah cleaning, the BMC demolished the bridges thus severing the link altogether. Resultantly now the people are forced to walk for 10 minutes through the highway or trudge the nullah risking their lives.

Ayub Shekason, a leader of the Samajwadi Party said that to walk through the nullah is absolutely dangerous and the people should not risk their lives. “There is a proper road via highway. As such they should not risk their lives to save a few minutes.” Assistant Municipal Commissioner M East Srinivas Kilje could not be reached.

Mankhurd is North Eastern suburb on the Harbour line and is the last stop in the city before Navi Mumbai. After Mankhurd, trains cross the Vashi Bridge before reaching Navi Mumbai. Unlike many of the railway stations in Mumbai, which have 'east' and 'west' sides, this station has a 'north' and 'south' side on either side of the railway track.

The Mankhurd suburb is the easternmost boundary of the BMC’s M-East ward. BARC employee township 'Anushakti Nagar', Naval Employee's Township, Mandala and Trombay are some nearby accessible places from the south side of this train station and P.M.G.P. Colony, Mohite-Patil Nagar, Sonapur, Mandala are some nearby accessible places from North side. The Spare Part Division Colony(SPDC) is located about 2 kilometres away from the station road.
