Non-bailable jail term for milk adulteration

The state government yesterday swung into action to check milk adulteration, deciding to make it a non-bailable offense attracting a punishment of up to a three-year jail term. This announcement was made by the Food and Civil Supply Minister Girish Bapat in the Assembly.

Replying to a calling attention motion raised by  Ameet Satam of the BJP, Bapat said, “At present, milk adulteration is a bailable offense with just a six-month imprisonment, which the state government now plans to change. The government strongly feels that if the punishment is raised to three years, there would be no scope for the accused to get bail immediately”.

“Currently, the state has only four mobile vans to test milk adulteration and that too, is not being done on a regular basis. However, now I will instruct the departments concerned to conduct checks on a regular basis. These vans would conduct tests more frequently on the milk being carried in vehicles entering Mumbai and other parts of the state,” he added further.

Satam, while raising this issue said, “Around 30 per cent of the milk brought into Mumbai is adulterated, posing serious health and safety hazards. Regular surprise checks are not being carried out owing to a shortage of both vans and staff. There is need to amend the existing laws to curb adulteration of milk, medicines and food served in hotels”.

Participating in the debate, several other members demanded a life-term for such offenses, but the Minister said that there could be difficulties in enacting a law with a life sentence for the offenders.
