NCP chief Sharad Pawar who visited drought-hit areas of Solapur district soon after casting his vote on April 29, the fourth and last phase of Lok Sabha elections in the state has now written a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over the drought conditions in the state.

In his letter Pawar, the former Union Agriculture Minister has urged the state government to take necessary steps to improve one of the most severe droughts the Maharashtra is facing since 1972.

“There is a severe drought situation in the entire state of Maharashtra including Satara, Solapur, Beed and Ahmednagar district. In terms of severity, the situation is most grave since 1972. Sincere measures should be taken into consideration and the state government  should take all possible decisions for the entire drought situation on a prior basis,” the letter has stated further.

Pawar has also sought time for a meeting with the Chief Minister to discuss crucial issues in the state. The meeting is all set to take place on Wednesday night.

The NCP president had came down heavily on the BJP-led state government’s drought relief measures, saying it woke up only after he toured some drought-affected areas recently.

Pawar has categorically stated that the government has woken up now after my visit. It was necessary to provide drinking water for people and cattle, employment, fodder, to set up cattle camps and put together a financial package for farmers.

Meanwhile, CM Fadnavis has directed the guardian secretary of each district to visit drought-affected areas and submit their reports by May 21. The secretaries have also been asked to review the relief work taken up by the state. The directives come at a time when the opposition is trying to corner the government over its failure to provide relief to drought-affected people.
