Navi Mumbai is set to receive its first Metro rail with the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) proposing the first 21 km route as the Belapur-Kharghar-Taloje-Kalamboli-Khasndeshwar corridor. CIDCO has approached the state to authorize it as the implementing agency. About 124 gram panchayats of Panvel and Uran taluka have been informed about the project undertaken by CIDCO, which has already starting receiving both suggestions and criticism.

The project equally is divided into three phases. The proposed route from Belapur-Kharghar-Taloje-MIDC-Kalamboli- Khandeshar railway station will be extended up to the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport. In the first phase, construction shall be from Belapur to Taloje. The total length of this line will be approximately 10.79 km and will have around 10 railway stations; Belapur Railway station, Sector-7 Belapur, Science Park, Utsav Chowk, Sector-14, Central Park, Pethapada, Sector-34, Panchnand and Pendhar.

In Phase-II the route will be from Khandeshwar to Taloje MIDC. The total length of the line will be around 8.15 km and have as many as seven railway stations; Khandeshwar Rly. Station, Sector-10 Kamothe, Sector-2E Kalamboli, Sector-7E Kalamboli, Sector-10E Kalamboli, Kasadi and two railway stations in MIDC area. Under Phase-III, two corridors shall be joined together between Pendhar and MIDC by a link of 2.2 km. This link shall form a loop from Belapur to Khandeshwar.

With the change in land use and considering the importance of commuting and transportation, it was found necessary to review the transportation system of Navi Mumbai. Accordingly, a new kind of transportation system like Metro railway is expected to be the ideal option. The work of preparation of master plan of the Metro rail Project was entrusted to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The six proposed rail corridors:

  • Uran-Ranjanpada-Nerul (28.3 km)
  • Belapur-Kharghar-Taloje-Kalamboli-Khandeshwar-New Airport (21 km)
  •  Vashi-Nerul-Panvel (25 km)
  • Ranjanpada-Kharkopar-Seawoods (14 km)
  • Dighe-Turbhe-Belapur (20 km)
  • Vashi-Ghansoli-Mhape (9 km)
