A 29-year-old undertrial, accused in bomb blast cases, allegedly tried to kill himself on Wednesday inside the city's high security Arthur Road Jail. Zainulabdeen alias Zahid Sheikh alias Jainul, who hails from Bhatkal in Karnataka.

However, as per unconfirmed sources, it has emerged that someone attacked him and tried to kill him inside the prison premises. The jail authorities denied having knowledge of the attack incident, but rather said that Jainul was misbehaving with the jail authorities and staff. The blasts accused suffered minor injuries to the head. He was administered basic medical treatment, transferred to a different cell and sent into solitary confinement.

“There was no such attack on him. News of it is incorrect. He was transferred to another cell for misbehaviour and disciplinary issues so he tried to inflict injury upon himself. It is a minor injury, not an attack,” said Rajvardhan Sinha, the Inspector General of Prisons.

Jainul was a part of a explosives supply chain module of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) which carried out a series of bomb blasts across India between 2006 and 2013, killing over 300 people, until he was arrested by the Maharashtra ATS. This includes the three bomb explosions that ripped the heart of the city in South Mumbai's busiest and crowded areas – Opera House, Zaveri Bazaar and Dadar (W) – on July 13, 2011, killing 26 people and injuring nearly 130 others.
