However, city may experience some light rainfall and thundershowers

Despite the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warning over the weekend about heavy rainfall in Mumbai, the city experienced very light to no rainfall and sunny weather from Sunday. IMD officials have claimed that the city is likely to go through a dry spell for the next four to five days, with light rainfall and thundershowers over the period.

According to official sources, the major monsoon activity has shifted from the West Coast to the eastern part of the country, resulting in a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. This has led to  dry spells in the city. However, soon the cyclonic circulation will change and the city will experience rainfall, claimed official sources. “We are expecting some subdued rainfall activity, as the monsoon current is weak. We can expect some isolated rainfall and or thundershowers in the city and suburbs for five days. However, we are unlikely to experience heavy rainfall,” said Ajay Kumar, Senior Scientist, IMD, Mumbai. Sources further claimed that the rainfall activity is predicted to be more in the Konkan area than the city area; and that the humidity levels in the city have also reduced from 90 per cent to approximately 70 per cent.

Apart from it, the air quality levels in the city have improved drastically. According to System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city is said to be 58, which is considered ‘Good’ on the air quality bar.
