MU changes exam date, no more clash for students

The Mumbai University (MU) has postponed the dates for the Ph.D (PET) exam from December 16 to December 23, so that the exam will no longer clash with the CSIR UGC NET exam.

As reported by this newspaper on Monday, the varsity had issued a notification last week, regarding its PET exam clashing with the previously announced date of The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Universal Grants Commission (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET) entrance exam.

Students were worried as the clashing of these exams, both of which would have the same branch of students appearing for them, would lead to them having to make the difficult choice between appearing for the two exams. Now, with a week's difference between the two exams, students can easily appear for both the exams without much fret. An official from the University confirmed the clash of the exams was the reason for the dates being changed. A notification regarding the change has been released and is available for students to check on the Mumbai University's online portal.

Kushal Mude, Joint Secretory for the National Forum For Quality Education, had written to Governor Vidyasagar Rao about this, requesting him to look into the matter and make the necessary changes.

Although Mude says he still hasn't heard back from the Governor, he is glad that MU changed the date. “Why couldn't they have kept the December 23 date to begin with? Why wait till things escalated and students got worried? Nevertheless, I am glad that the students will not have to suffer because of this.”

The Ph.D exam, for which there are 78 different subjects under 4 faculties, will be conducted for the students online for the first time this year.
