The MMRDA floated tenders for the fourth time, after receiving no bidders in the third round

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Development Authority (MMRDA) had to float tenders for the fourth time around, for the entire monorail service. Official sources claimed that the MMRDA received two bids from two different companies on Monday, which will be finalised by next week.

The MMRDA has been on the lookout for an operation and maintenance contractor since early 2017 for the entire 20-km long Chembur-Jacob Circle monorail corridor. The development authority had received a very poor response all the previous times that tenders had been floated. When the MMRDA floated tenders for the first time in early 2017, the bidders had reverted citing problems in tender conditions, owing to which conditions were relaxed.
However, when the tenders were floated for the second time in October 2017, the MMRDA received just a single bid from ILFS. When the tenders were called out for the third time, the MMRDA received no bidders. Sources claimed that the MMRDA received two bidders in the fourth round – Reliance and ILFS. “We have received two bidders and they will be finalised by next week”, said a senior MMRDA official, on the condition of anonymity.

The Phase-I (Chembur to Wadala) of the monorail services was suspended on November 9, 2017, after two coaches of the corridor were charred due to the fire which broke out in the early hours of the day. Along with it, the Phase-II (Wadala-Jacob Circle) corridor has missed several deadlines in the past to start operations of the monorail corridor. According to sources, the MMRDA authorities will be starting operations on both the monorail corridors together. “The Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) will be checking the entire monorail corridor by next week. Once we get their approval, we will start the services by April first week”, said the official.

Earlier, the authorities had claimed to start the services by March 2018. However, sources claimed that the operation of the 20-km-long corridor is more likely to start from April 2018.
