MMRDA receives approval for Metro 4A corridor

The 2.7-km Metro-4A corridor will be an extension of the Metro-4 corridor from Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had received an approval of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Metro-4A corridor project from the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Chairman of the planning authority, yesterday.

The Metro-4A corridor is a 2.7-km long corridor and will be an extension from the Metro 4 corridor (Wadala to Kasarvadavali). The Metro-4A corridor is an extension from Kasarvadavali and will end at Gaimukh. The extension will have two more stations added, namely Gowniwada and Gaimukh to the 32-km long Wadala-Kasarvadavali Metro 4 corridor.

The planning authority has sanctioned Rs 949 crores for the Metro-4A project and has recommended the project to the State Government for it's approval. According to sources, the MMRDA will be spending Rs 449 crore for the civil work of the project. “The project has been sent to the State Government for its approval. Once we get the approval, we will start inviting tenders for the Metro-4A project. Its approval should take another four to five months,” said Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The demand for commuting options is increasing day by day from the commuters. Apart from the approval of the extended Metro-4A corridor (Wadala to Kasarvadavali), according to official MMRDA sources, Metro 5 corridor (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) will be coming up in the metropolitan region. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in the authority meeting stated that the planning authority will put every effort to make the commuter's commute easy and comfortable. According to a Senior Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official, the two extension stations- Gowniwada and Gaimukh will add around 1.5 lakh riders to the 8.7 lakh commuters. Further, official sources claimed that funding for the Metro-4A corridor project will be raised from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The Metro-4A project is scheduled to be completed by March 2022.
