Matheran's lady loco pilot creates history

Around half a month has passed since Shubhangi Khobragade was posted as an assistant loco pilot on the prestigious Neral-Matheran section, but it is yet to sink in for the young, hard working railway enthusiast. After all, she is the first woman assistant local pilot to be working on this tricky Ghat section, especially in the monsoon season.

Starting her career at the Diesel Shed at Kurla, she learned about the functional and technical knowledge of a locomotive. Her first trip on the Neral-Matheran section was just another day in her six years long journey in the world of railways, but wasn't for the history where she made her mark. She has been appointed at the section because of her sincerity at work, said railway officials.

The army of loco pilots with Central Railway has 37 women. Of these, 16 are employed with the Mumbai Division at different levels, 4 with the Bhusawal Division, 11 in Nagpur Division, 3 at Solapur Division and 3 in Pune Division. These women loco pilots control different types of trains, including freight, suburban and the ones in yard sections.
