Know your candidates!

In an attempt to educate voters as to who they will be voting for, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has published a report wherein details from all the affidavits were clubbed together. Here are some of the highlights from the report.

1)  Criminal cases background
As many as 216, that is 13 percent, of the contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. Around 9 percent, 154 contesting candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

A party wise analysis with respect to those who declared criminal cases against self shows that:

  • 41 (24%) out of 173 candidates are from Shiv Sena,
  • 19(11%) out of 171 candidatesare  from Indian National Congress
  • 39(25%) out of 154 candidates are from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena
  • 23(15%) out of 151 candidatesare  from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)
  • 19 (14%) out of 132 candidates are from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
  • 5 (7%) out of 71 candidates are from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
  • 5 (8%) out of 60 candidates are from Samajwadi Party
  • 3 (7%) out of 45 candidates are from All India Majlis- e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM)
  • 4 (11%) out of 36 are independent candidates


With respect to declared serious criminal cases:

  • 28 (16%) out of 173 candidates are from Shiv Sena
  • 16 (9%) out of 171 candidates are from Indian National Congress
  • 22 (14%) out of 154 candidates are from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena
  • 14 (9%) out of 151 candidates are from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)
  • 16 (12%) out of132 candidates are from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
  • 4 (6%) out of 71 candidates are from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
  • 4 (7%) out of 60 candidates are from Samajwadi Party
  • 2 (4%) out of 45 candidates are from All India Majlis- e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM)
  • 2 (6%) out 36 are independent candidates
