Nationwide campaign launched to locate selfless citizen volunteers and reward their efforts

“When you see dead bodies lying around you or injured people crying for help, your perception of life changes completely. You start to question why you are living in the first place?” states Dr. Kuresh Zorabi, an eye surgeon, who was a witness to 26/11 terror attacks in the city in 2008. Kuresh was opposite Nariman House on that day.

Kuresh, one of the past awardees of Karmaveer Chakra, awarded by iCONGO and CtrlS (Indian Confederation of NGOs), for saving lives during 26/11 was speaking at a press conference organised to launch Karmayuga – a nationwide campaign by iCONGO and CtrlS to recognise volunteers among citizens and unsung heroes and awarding them for their work, in order to ‘incentivise’ such people into volunteering, and also be an example for others interested in social work.

Addressing the media, actor Gul Panag, Founder, Social Outreach and Accreditation Programme (SOAP) said, “The Karmayuga Campaign is in its true meaning ‘voluntary’. It is the most ethical concept ever put down to work. According to one’s own capabilities and discretion, volunteers are expected to work in their desired area of interest in their own way.”

Corroborating that citizens need to be ‘incentivised’ to volunteer, Panag said that SOAP, a volunteering portal will provide credits to volunteers, which will carry weightage when a particular volunteer applies to a university or job. “Community service is increasingly gaining importance, especially for students applying for courses abroad as well as for people applying for jobs. However, many malpractices of getting community service certificates have crept in. We want to ensure that people who choose to be volunteers experience community service by really being a part of it,” said Panag.

Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 20)You could be running behind schedule in a certain assignment. In your anxiety to get things done in a hurry you could end up over looking some important details. Your plans to make up for lost time at home could also run into some rough weather because of the attitude of a family member. Try not to be overly sensitive with loved ones but look on the positive side of all that you have. Perhaps you are taking a lot for granted.
