The State Government is planning to enforce a statewide ban on plastic carry bags after 'Gudi Padva' (Maharashtrian New Year) sometime in March-April next year. This was said by Minister for Environment Ramdas Kadam after he chaired a meeting on the need for banning plastic carry bags,  in Mantralaya, Mumbai. The Minister stated the Government has sought proposals from many organisations on alternative environment-friendly carry bags.

The Minister for Environment stated that it is also proposed to give grants to Womens Self Help Groups (SHG) to enable them in making cloth bags.

Referring to the allocation of funds to Guardian Ministers of 36 districts in the state, meant for spending on novel schemes, Kadam stated that the Government will hold talks with the Guardian Ministers on the need to spend the allocation on promoting environment friendly issues. He added that the Government will soon start airing publicity campaigns on banning plastic carry bags on 'All India Radio (AIR)', Doordarshan, FM Radio channels.
