Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan has categorically stated that asking BJP to form the government in  Karnataka will only encourage rampant horse trading.

As the uncertainty in Karnataka prevailed after a fractured verdict in which no party reached the half-way mark, both the BJP – which emerged as the single largest party – and the Congress-JD(S) combine have staked claim to form the government. Speaking to reporters against this backdrop, Chavan said, “Giving the BJP, which emerged as the single largest party, a chance to form the government would be like encouraging horse trading. Only a tie-up between the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) could provide a stable government in Karnataka”.

“The results of Karnataka Assembly poll are really unexpected. The Congress party was expected to either win with a majority or emerge as the single largest party. I can say this because I have campaigned in that state. What is surprising is that the Congress's vote share is 1.5 per cent higher than that of the BJP. It is apparent that the Congress getting lesser seats despite a higher vote share because of tactical understanding between certain political parties and the BJP. This is really shocking,” he added further.

“The overall strategy of the BJP was like this: In areas where the saffron party is weak, like those dominated by the Vokkaliga community, the BJP had decided to support JD (S) candidates who have a strong voter base in the community. This understanding was done in certain areas in order to defeat the Congress. This is a tactical understanding. It is part of the game. Anyway, we accept the people’s verdict. Now the ball is in the Governor’s court,” Chavan pointed out.

“I am once again reiterating that only the JD (S) and Congress post poll alliance can provide a stable government in Karnataka. If BJP is given a chance to form the government, it would be like encouraging horse trading across that state,” the former Maharashtra CM clarified.
