Four days after a 27-year-old goldsmith, Nitesh Soni, was found murdered and lying in a pool of blood in his workshop on Saturday evening, Dindoshi police arrested his relative, Hemant Soni (28) for the crime.

The arrest was made from Rajasthan, where Hemant was hiding at his native place. The police have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder. According to police sources, the deceased, Nitesh, was working till late night on Friday to complete an assignment. Since his wife, who is expecting a child, had gone to their native place at Rajasthan, Nitesh did not mind spending the night at his workshop and completing the work. The next day, on Saturday, when Nitesh did not respond to phone calls and was not seen the whole day, his neighbours peeped into his workshop, only to find him lying dead in a pool of blood. Dindoshi police were informed of the incident and an investigation was initiated.During the probe, it was revealed that cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 15.50 lakh were missing from the workshop. Accordingly, a case of murder and robbery was registered against an unidentified person. After enquiries were made by police, it was revealed Nitesh had developed personal differences with his distant relative, Hemant, who was in the same business. However, after Hemant was reportedly not doing well both personally and professionally, he blamed Nitesh for it. Acting on this information, police began searching for Hemant, who had disappeared suspiciously. “With Hemant's disappearance, our suspicions grew stronger and we tracked him at Rajasthan. After interrogating him, he confessed of killing his relative, Nitesh, over personal and professional grudges,” said a police officer. The arrested accused, Hemant, said during investigation that he was highly debt ridden after having gambled the money and spent lavishly on bar dancers. “Hemant had suspected that Nitesh had complained of his bad habits to his wife, due to which she abandoned him three months ago to stay with her parents. On the professional front also Nitesh was doing far better than Nitesh, which only added fuel to the fire,” added the officer.Hemant confessed of his crime and said that on Friday night Nitesh and him were ensued in an argument which turned violent and he stabbed Nitesh with a sharp object near his eye, causing death due to excessive blood loss. After killing Nitesh, the accused fled the workshop with Rs 5.50 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh, said police. The arrest was made on Tuesday and Hemant was brought to Mumbai the next day. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder (section 302), causing disappearance of evidence (section 201) and robbery (section 397). Hemant was remanded in police custody for further investigation.
