The Mumbai University and College Teachers Association (MUCTA), has urged the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Varsity, not to appoint principals from colleges, who have kept the salaries of their staff unpaid for months together, on different local inquiry committees. In the letters to the VC, Dr. Devanand Shinde and Pro-VC, Dr. Dinesh Kamble of the Mumbai University, MUCTA President Prof. Vaibhav Narwade has stated that there are many colleges in the state, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and adjoining areas, which have not paid the salaries of their staff for months together. As such, the principals of such colleges should not be appointed on committees set up to enquire into the activities of other colleges.

This matter was already discussed in a senate meeting of the university, held on March 30, wherein Prof. Narwade had pointed out that prompt action should be taken in the matter so that no wrong message is sent out in the educational field.

Usually, the inspection of different colleges is done by the Local Inquiry Committee relating to different issues, including granting affiliation to colleges and unaided courses etc. The committees function as per criteria stipulated by the university, the National Accreditation and Assessment (NAAC) and the university’s academic council.

The colleges that have reportedly not paid the salaries to their staff include the Saraswati College of Engineering at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, Yadavrao Tasgaonkar College of Engineering & Management, Karjat, G V Acharya College of Engineering, Karjat and Sinhgad Engineering College, Pune. According to the data compiled by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), the staff in ten out of 80 professional colleges; pharmacy, engineering and management education institutes in Mumbai and adjoining areas, have not received salaries for several months.
