Gutkha mafia active in Mumbai and adjoining areas, spreads web from Dongri to Dahisar

Despite a year having passed after leader of opposition Dhananjay Munde raised a serious concern over the openly available Gutkha in Maharashtra after a ban was imposed by the state government and demanded that the punishment for the offenders should be enhanced to three in place of six months and it should be made a non-bailable offense, nothing has changed till now with Gutkha still being  freely available across at all the nooks and corners of the city.

If we believethe officials from the Mumbai Crime branch they revealed that the Gutkha mafia is very active in the city and their turnover is in hundreds of crores per year, this mafia has their dens in South Mumbai and are supplying their stuff to all of the  93 police stations jurisdiction in the city and suburbs.

On that occasion,  Munde made a serious allegation in the house by saying smuggling happens with the connivance of corrupt officials in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) whilst demanding an inquiry by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). But as compared to last year, both the Gutkha mafia and their suppliers have increased exponentially .

After Gutkha was banned in the state is was smuggled from neighboring states like Gujarat where it is not banned. Smugglers doubled the rate of  guthka – as also the presence of scented tobacco mix has doubled after ban with demand for it increasing day by day.

A bunch of the local residents from Dharavi have  alleged that only in Dharavi there are nine big Gutkha godowns functioning under Dharavi Police station Jurisdiction and if cops raid the place they will find crores of Gutkha there.

Local resident Paul Raphel alleged that Dharavi has the highest number of youth falling prey to cancer due to chewing of gutka despite the ban. During the time of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria,  he says  that he had made the complaints against Drugs and Gutkha in the city and on that occasion we won the battle, and now we have again launched movement to ban the Gutkha across the city.

There are few major localities in the city which are highly involve in this business and smugglers from these areas supply banned Gutkha to various parts of the city, including Dongri, Dharavi, Null Bazar, Madanpura, Khar, Bandra, Santacruz, Malad, Andheri, Chedanagar in Ghatkopar and  Dahisar. If local police or FDA get hold of the Gutka smugglers, they easily walk free as it is bailable offense with a punishment of a maximum of six months in prison, FDA only seizes the goods and send to confirm if it Guthka or something else, Paul added.

Few major suppliers in City
Saleem from Dongri, Aleem from Madanpura, Akhtar, Parvez, Sanu, Saleem, Mahesh Vada Pav, IY Yusuf, Nadeem all from Null Bazar, Kaashif, Parvez, Tayyab Taalib all from Bandra, Shadab, Ramesh, Sarfaraz, Nasir, Lallu, Nadeem all active in Khar, Rajesh Gupta, Didi in Santacruz, Abdullah in Malad, Zafar, Javed from  Andheri, Tayyab in Chedanagar in Ghatkopar while Saakib, Irshad, Zaheer, Mujeeb and Akber from Dharavi are allegedly involve in this racket.
