CR to run air-conditioned trains

The Central Railway will run four air-conditioned trains in the next few months. These trains are likely to be run on the mainline between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kalyan as full AC and semi-AC locals services.

In a reply to Bharatiya Janata Party MP, Kirit Somaiya, Union Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal informed him that in the next batch of AC rakes received from Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, four rakes will be given to Central Railway. This is likely to happen by March 2019.

Currently, only one AC rake is being run on the suburban system of Mumbai by the Western Railway. In the first seven months of its run, the AC local has brought in Rs 9 crore revenue with ticket and season pass sales. The rake has a capacity of almost 6,000 commuters on one trip.

One of the major issues with the AC rakes on the suburban system is the time taken by the rake for the door closing mechanism. According to WR officials, this causes stress on the system as the train needs 30 to 45 seconds to halt at a station, while a non-AC train needs only 15 to 20 seconds.

Another issue with the AC rake is that its clearance height in case of water logged areas is less than a non-AC train, which means that its not run through more than four inches water on the tracks. Since sections of the CR are extremely prone to water logging, this is going to be a challenge to tackle according to railway officials, it is expected that lessons learned after running the current rake have been incorporated while designing the new rakes. The ones being procured by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) are also expected to be designed better with under slug machinery.
