The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) will have the largest steel span in the country for the construction of the sea bridge, claimed that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Development Authority (MMRDA). Authorities claimed that the link will be built with steel decks of 4-km, one out of which will be of 180 metres long span.

According to official sources, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will be the country’s largest orthotropic bridge. An orthotropic bridge deck comprises of a structural steel deck plate situated to hold the bridge still. “Keeping in mind the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT) requirements, we have decided to keep a huge gap between the sea and the bridge, and accordingly we have decided to build the sea link using the steel decks. One deck will be the country’s largest of 180 metres”, said a senior official, MMRDA. The MTHL will be built with steel decks of a span of 4-km. Official sources claimed that one of the decks will be of 180 metres which is the largest span in the country. However, other steel decks will be approximately 110 metres long minimum.

The proposed MTHL has been planned to facilitate decongestion of the island city by improving the connectivity between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. The MTHL includes a 22-km long, six lane bridge. This includes a long creek bridge; about 16.5-km, with 5.5-km viaducts on land on either sides of the link. Along with it, the sea link has interchanges at Sewri in Mumbai and at Chirle on NH-4B in Navi Mumbai.

Apart from it, official sources claimed that the soil testing work for the MTHL for all the three packages has been completed by 50 to 70 per cent. Officials claimed that the soil testing work is expected to be completed by the end of this month. “We are going to finish the soil testing work of the MTHL by the end of this month as the sea gets rough by the first week of June. So, we are targeting to finish the soil testing before monsoons. During monsoons, the committee will come up with its final design for the sea link, and the work orders will be issued soon after that,” said a senior official, MMRDA.
