A massive manhunt has been launched to nab a 30-year-old youth who allegedly bashed up a Police Constable after he called him 'bhaiyya' at a shop outside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali.

According to Kasturba Marg police sources, the incident took place late in the night, when Constable Karande Bhausaheb was drinking water at the location. Anil alias Guddu Dubey got out of his car but unintentionally stepped on Bhausaheb's foot.

Reacting to the incident, Bhausaheb told Dubey, “Bhaiyya neeche dekh ke (brother, please look before you step). Dubey allegedly got furious and started beating the constable, who wasn't wearing his uniform at the time. The assault continued for 15 minutes. Meanwhile a mob gathered around but no one intervened to help Bhausaheb, who ended up with serious injuries and had to receive 16 stitches,” police said.

Following the incident, Dubey fled in his car while the constable was rushed to a nearby hospital. However, with the help of CCTV cameras installed near the spot, the Kasturba Marg police managed to identify his car registration number and arrested one of the men who was with Dubey at the time of the incident.

After going through his criminal record, police found out that Dubey was a hardened criminal wanted in connection with a number of cases registered against him at various police stations, including the Kasturba Marg police station and Meera Road police station. He was released on bail in April. Following the incident, a case under relevant sections has been registered and further investigations are in progress, police added.
