Officials from the Thane unit of the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against four people including a medical store owner in Kashimira for the illegal over-the-counter (OTC) sale of cough syrup containing codeine phosphate. There are stringent norms for its sale and purchase so that the syrup which is a powerful intoxicant cannot be on abused.

Acting on a tip-off provided by FDA's Bandra-based Vigilance Wing, about the illegal trade, a team led by drug inspector Pravin Harak sent a decoy customer to Guru Kripa Medical and General Stores near the GCC Club in Kashimira.

In his statement to the police, the drug inspector said that the store salesman was caught red handed while selling two bottles of the cough syrup to the decoy at a price higher than the maximum retail price and that too without asking for the mandated prescription of a registered medical practitioner.

The FDA team swooped down on the stores and found eight more bottles in the premises. It came to light that the consignment of 10 bottles was purchased on cash from an unregistered supplier without any billing transaction.

A case under the relevant Sections of the Drug and Cosmetic Act, 1948, and Section 336 of the Indian Penal Code for endangering life or personal safety of others has been registered at the Kashimira police station against four persons including the store owner, salesperson, pharmacist and the supplier. Further investigations are in progress.
