CFFJ demands probe into Elgaar Parishad source of funding

The Citizens Forum For Justice (CFFJ) has demanded investigation into the source of funding of the Elgaar Parishad and other such organisations for the alleged role in the violent clashes that broke out in Bhima-Koregaon on January 1, earlier this year.

Speaking to newspersons here at Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) yesterday, CFFJ Organisational Secretary, Uma Mahesh, further demanded that the state government appoint an expert committee of historians to bring out the true facts related to the last rites of Sambhaji Maharaj, the sanads given to Gopal Govind and others.

Earlier in the day, the CFFJ submitted its 67 page fact finding report to Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Mahesh argued that the rally at Shanivarwada in Pune, the clashes at Vadhu and Prerna Marches organised by the Elgaar Parishad, were not isolated and linked to each other. He added that had the police had taken preventive measures and adequate police was deployed well in advance the subsequent events could have been avoided.

Mahesh further argued that during their interaction with the locals, they disclosed that the armed people from outside the area had mingled with the crowds.

Kamal Mehta, a member of the CFFJ fact finding committee, stated attempts were made to deliberately distort history and to set up clashes between two castes. He added that the depositions made by the leaders of Elgaar Parishad before them made it clear that they were aware of what was going to happen in Bhima-Koregaon on New Years eve. However, the committee members Mahesh and Mehta admitted that the Inspector General of Police, BBM leader, Prakash Ambedkar and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar, did not respond to their invitations to depose before them. Mehta further disclosed that despite requests the Elgaar Parishad did not share their version of the incident and historical facts.
