The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), yesterday, initiated action against all illegal encroachments done by land mafia individual, Mohammed Kallu Shah in the Ghatkopar. The encroachments were done on two acres of the Covic body's land, where a nursery, parking lot and several sand godowns cropped up illegally. The BMC has registered an FIR against the accused under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (M.R.T.P) Act.
The encroached land was originally reserved for roads, fire department, civic hospitals, dispensaries and green space. Shah had encroached on the land approximately 10 years ago. He had leased the plot for a nursery, parking lot and to sand contractors. Over the years, Shah allegedly diverted the attention of the BMC and the court by registering 30-40 false cases. The residents of the area were also enraged by the illegal encroachments. A total of 100 BMC workers were finally deployed to raze the structures to the ground. The drive was done under the surveillance of Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Narendra Barde and Assistant Commissioner, Sudhanshu Dwivedi.
