Promising better roads for the coming monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had hurriedly passed seven road proposals in a special meeting held a week ago. Afternoon D&C inspected the roads selected for pre-monsoon repairs in the Jawahar Nagar area of P/South ward (Goregaon West). The revelations were shocking! Of the three roads selected for repairs, one road was newly built and had no pothole or cracks at all!
Three roads - Road no. 6, 9 and 13 - from the Jawahar Nagar area were mentioned in the list of roads that would be repaired prior to monsoon to avoid pothole problems. Also, these roads were labeled as pothole-chronic roads post the survey conducted by BMC. Road no. 6 also known as 'Brahmakumaris Marg' is made of pavers and rest were asphalt roads. Barring road no. 6, others appeared in a good condition during our inspection. Further, it was revealed that road no. 13 also known as 'Shantinath Swami Marg' was recently resurfaced by the area councilor Kiran Patel. When we contacted Patel, she confirmed that the road was recently resurfaced by her.
Although Road no. 9 appeared in a good condition, Patel stressed that the road is uneven and thus featured in the list of repairs.
A senior civic official from the road department said, “All the wards had surveyed the roads and made a list which was forwarded to us. The road repairs list was prepared after compiling all the details from the wards.”
This issue was raised during the special meeting by BJP corporator Dilip Patel, but the proposals were passed later. “I had objected to the passing of these proposals, but they passed it. The BMC wants to just favor the contractors by giving them contracts of such newly-built roads,” said Patel.
