While these cyber related cases are increasing at an alarming rate, cyber experts warn citizens to learn from various incidents of cyber crime and update their device with latest softwares.

The outstanding percentage in the crime cases related to cyber crime has shot up in the last six years which is posing a big threat to the world across and Mumbai and Maharashtra. If we look at the figures we will understand the present scenario. According to cyber crime sources, in the last six years, Mumbai has seen increase 2096 percent increase in cyber related cases.

In 2012, there were only 62 cases of cyber crime were registered across Mumbai.  In 2013, this figure has increased to 169 and in 2014, this figure rose to 604 and in 2015, this figure rises to 912. In 2016, that figure was 928 and later in 2017, this figure has 1361 and in 2018, figure rose to 1362. This year, till march, there were 397 cases have been registered so far.

“Now a days, we see increase number of cyber related cases as people now are aware about the cyber laws and crime, but this figure is still less as many cyber related cases doesn’t converted in to an FIR as police don’t bother to take the cognizance. To control this cyber menace, government should establish a dedicated cyber force and like any police station, while registering an FIR there should not be any criteria,” said a cyber expert.

Another cyber expert said, “Mumbai being financial capital what I see as per cases that I handle, financial cyber crime has increased. Less cyber policing and non deterrent laws is an another reason. Accused after being released on bail, change the jurisdiction and commit the same cyber crime.”

Meanwhile, we see increase in numbers of cyber cases. However, the detection rate of cyber cases is far low. In 2018, out of 1362 cases, Mumbai Police could solve only 260 cases this year. So far, out of 397 cases only 49 cases was solved. “To reduce cyber related cases government should have fixed budget to spread cyber awareness in vernacular languages – this initiative should also be taken by banks and social media big companies. People should be aware and learn from various incidents and they should follow cyber hygiene and keep their computer updated with latest softwares and patches,” suggested another cyber expert.
