Gold worth over Rs 1 crore was dropped into garbage bin for later pickup

Officials of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU-Customs) intercepted a passenger and recovered gold worth over Rs 1 crore that was being smuggled into the country. Interestingly, the accused dropped the gold bars inside a garbage bin, to be picked up by someone later.

According to AIU sources, in the wee hours last night, officials at International Airport intercepted  Kunhi Koppa Irshad, who arrived by Jet Airways flight number 9W 537 from Dubai. After noticing his movements, the officials followed him from the aircraft. Later, he was seen dropping five packets containing 32 gold bars weighing 116 gm each, (collectively weighing 3729 gm) valued at Rs 1,04,15,749 in the garbage bin inside the toilet near the immigration hall.

After observing his activities, the officials immediately swung into action and reached the spot. They recovered the gold bars and intercepted Irshad. Officials took him into custody and have started investigating further.

During interrogation, Irshad admitted that the gold bars were given to him by one of his acquaintances in Dubai, who asked him to drop the bars in the garbage bin of the toilet, for which he was promised monetary benefits.

“It is suspected that some local people may be associated with him and we are investigating the case from that angle also. The gold bars were seized under the Provision of Customs Act. Irshad was arrested and further investigations are in progress,” said a AIU source.
