Admin begins installing rope nets at Mantralaya

Shaken out of its stupor after the recent suicide of Harshal Raote, a convict out on furlough last week in Mantralaya, the administration has woken up and began installing safety rope nets yesterday. The safety rope net was installed covering the atrium (on the ground floor) from the passage of the second floor. Sources disclosed that such safety wire nets will be installed covering all possible locations and covering all angles from where people can fall off or jump. After recent attempts of suicides by farmers and youths inside and outside Mantralaya, the place has acquired the unwelcome sobriquet of 'suicide point'.

In a caustic comment, leader of opposition in the legislative assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, while referring to the installation of rope netting at Mantralaya, remarked that by just merely installing the rope nets is not enough. If the government really wants to give justice to the people, then the government should first dust the cobwebs and nets that have covered up its functioning. If the government is not going to remove these cobwebs then these rope nets will serve no purpose, he added.

Last week, 45-year-old Harshal Raote, a convict from Open Jail in Paithan who was out on furlough came to Mantralaya with a plea to reduce his jail sentence. In the evening, he jumped off the fifth floor, falling to his death. Earlier, 25-year-old Avinash Shete doused himself with kerosene and tried to set himself on fire in desperation after no news came forth of the exam he gave for the agriculture officer post. However, plain clothes policemen intervened and prevented Shete from taking the extreme step.

Earlier, last month, octogenarian Dharma Patil, a farmer from Dhule, consumed poison in Mantralaya and later succumbed in the hospital.

Over the last weekend, a unidentified worker from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation too tried to immolate himself outside. 'Ramgiri' the official residence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur.

The worker was part of seven workers who were dismissed from service over disciplinary action taken against them. The seven municipal employees had threatened to commit suicide if they were not reinstated to their post.
