The Yellow Gate police have arrested two people for robbing bikes thereby recovering a total of 29 two-wheelers worth Rs 6.30 lakhs. The accused duo, identified as Meraz Shaikh (19) and Mustaaq Lalbabu Mansuri alias Salman (19), are residents of Mankhurd while Salman hails from CBD Belapur.

According to the Yellow Gate police officials, Shaikh is said to be the mastermind of the racket. The accused duo were arrested on the basis of a complaint registered on January 3. “The complainant in the case Harshad Koli (25) had alleged that his bike (MH 02 CF 4707) was robbed near Bhaucha Dhakka petrol pump. He said that his bike was parked at the venue for some time and later it went missing despite being locked.

A case of theft was registered but the investigation proved difficult as the accused had left no leads. CCTV footages of the premises showed Shaikh wearing a cap with a a picture imprinted on it. On January 5, Shaikh arrived again on the same spot again wearing the same cap to steal another bike when one of the police informers alerted the police,” said a police officer from Yellow Gate police station.

“A trap was laid by the police officers and Shaikh was arrested. During interrogation he revealed the name of Salman as an accomplice. Investigations revealed that the duo have been booked under various theft cases at different police stations around Navi Mumbai including Nerul, Belapur and Kharghar.

The duo, using a master key stole bikes from 2016 to 2019. A total of 29 two-wheelers worth Rs 6 lakhs were stolen from different locations around Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. After being produced at the court the duo have been sent to police custody till Tuesday while further investigation is underway.

''The arrested duo used to sell the robbed bikes for Rs 7,000 to 10,000 to people in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai,'' said Kiran Mandre, Police Sub Inspector (PSI) and investigation officer in the case.
