Divisional Deputy Director of Education, Commissioner, Education issued notices to suspend 1,200 teachers after declaring as irregular their appointments on vacant posts in various schools in Mumbai between 2010 and 2014

While election to fill in vacant seats in the state legislative council from the two teachers' constituencies-Mumbai and Konkan, are slated to be held on 25 June, nearly 1200 teachers from Mumbai have been suspended  declaring their appointments as irregular.

MLC Kapil Patil,President, “Shikshak Bharati”, in a letter dated 9 June to the the Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commission of India, has pointed out that the Bombay High Court has already ruled that the decision of the state education department to suspend 1200 teachers from Mumbai recruited between 2010 and 2014 in Mumbai, was illegal and had stayed the decision. Despite this the school education department has issued fresh orders on 28 May suspending the teachers and has ordered fresh inquiry. This is nothing but an attempt to keep them away from the elections.

“ The Divisional Deputy Director of Education, Commissioner, Education has issued notices to suspend 1200 teachers after declaring as irregular their appointments on vacant posts in various schools in Mumbai between 2010 and 2014”.

“Despite court orders, once again notices have been issued for cancellation of individual approvals granted to appointment of all these teachers, and these notices and fresh hearings are being held. This action is in breach of standard Election Code of Conduct. State education minister Vinod Tawde himself was present in the office of Commissioner, Konkan Division for submission of nomination form of the candidate sponsored by him”.

“This is nothing but a deliberate attempt to coerce 1200 teachers from Mumbai to cast their vote by issuing them notices for cancellation of individual approvals to their appointments. Cancellation of individual approvals to appointments without any inquiry is completely illegal and such action is being taken out of vengeance. This is also contrary to the decision of the high court and therefore also contemptuous. This is a government action seeking to interfere with the transparent procedure of elections and an attempt to influence voter-teachers by coercing them, MLC Kapil Patil has stated in his letter”.

The Nashik constituency includes, Ahmednagar, Nandgaon, Dhule and Jalgaon districts, while Mumbai Teachers’ Constituency covers Mumbai city and suburbs. In Nashik teachers constituency, 25 candidates are in the fray. MLC Kapil Patil (Lok Bharati) represented Mumbai constituency, while Apurva Hiray (independent), represented Nashik division teachers' constituencies.
