Akshay Pai, Founder & CEO, Nutrova

A firm believer in the power of nutrition to change lives, Akshay Pai founded Nutrova in 2011, with the simple aim of providing people with evidence-based nutritional products that enable them to be in complete control of their health.

Armed with an undergraduate degree in Industrial Biotechnology (at the Centre for Biotechnology, Anna University), Akshay worked in the pharmaceutical and in-vitro diagnostics industries in a cross functional role that involved exposure to R&D, Product Development and Marketing, with a year off to pursue an MBA at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.

Experiencing the importance of early diagnosis in preventing the escalation of disease first hand led to a growing interest in what individuals could do to prevent the onset of disease in the first place.

In conversation with Dominic Rebello, Akshay reveals his goal of developing evidence based, easy to use nutritional and nutraceutical products, combined with easy to understand information rooted in science, which together would enable people to take charge of their health.

What is the idea behind Nutrova?
Nutrition is the single most important determinant of good health that we can actually control, but its impact is largely misunderstood or ignored. Ensuring that our body gets the nutrients it needs can dramatically improve and even optimize our health and our lives. Our goal at Nutrova is to enable people to take charge of their health through evidence-based, easy-to-use nutrition and nutraceutical products. Nutrition, and the incredible impact it has on how we feel, think and look, without us even realising it, is an area that we can all take charge of – but very few actually do.

How are you different from others?
Our focus is on developing products that have measurable outcomes, based
on clinical evidence. Staying firmly rooted in science allows us to objectively inform consumers exactly how a product is going to benefit them, and in how long. Knowing that a particular nutrient will help achieve a specific health goal empowers consumers to proactively take charge of their health.

Any expansion plans?
In the short to medium term, our focus will be on introducing new products that are at the final stages of development, as well as expanding our retail presence across India. We’re in the process of initiating exports as well, and expect the same to start towards the end of this year.

Your vision for the company?
Our focus at the moment is on addressing the needs of a relatively niche audience – 20 to 50 year old individuals in urban areas, who are proactively interested in their health and wellness. Our vision for Nutrova is to provide nutrient based solutions to individuals across the spectrum – including clinical nutrition and disadvantaged populations.

Where do you see yourself five years down the road?
Insufficient nutrition can adversely impact an individual’s growth and development, whereas unbalanced nutrition can lead to lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and CHD – both extremes of which are rampant in India. Five years down the road, we see Nutrova as a leader in the nutrition space in India, with a growing presence overseas, enabling individuals to take charge of their health through evidence-based nutrition and nutraceutical products.
