Tejas Parulekar, Co-Founder, SaffronStays

A Chartered Accountant by training and corporate banker by profession, Tejas Parulekar is the Founder of SaffronStays: Where Families Bond. SaffronStays is a micro-hospitality collective that manages the hospitality operations, branding, marketing and reservations of leisure homes across India. During a family trip in Europe, Tejas and her husband/founder of SaffronStays Deven Parulekar, noticed the dearth of curated and quality home-stay options in the country. This inspired the couple to ideate a platform and SaffronStays was born. In conversation with Dominic Rebello, Tejas says that she strongly believes ‘Devil lies in the details’ and urges people to embrace nature, especially when they are surrounded by it.

What is the idea behind SaffronStays?
SaffronStays: Where Families Bond is a micro-hospitality start-up by me and my husband Devendra Parulekar that aims to provide curated travel experiences for discerning travelers. The company manages the Hospitality Operations, Reservations, Branding and Marketing of leisure homes across India. The lack of curated, quality homestays coupled with the cookie cutter ideology of holiday and hospitality options in the country inspired the founders to start a company that catered to small and large families seeking quick yet enriching getaways from top metros of the country. SaffronStays now operates 30 homes across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu and Goa, and is eyeing 40 homes by the end of December 2017.

How big is the potential for a business like yours?
The sky is the limit for a business like ours. High Net worth Individuals are aplenty in a country like India. These home owners are money rich, but time poor. More often than not, we have interacted with individuals who have painstakingly created leisure homes with passionate effort, but do not have the time, inclination or the skill to keep it functional. We hope to extend our services to those owners and turn their dead assets into business. Homestays and staycations are slowly starting to captivate the Indian audience and guests who have tasted a SaffronStays experience always come back for more. We expect this to be a Rs 5,000 cr market opportunity by 2020.

How are you different from others?
SaffronStays is not an aggregator of homes or homestays. Each home that wishes to be a part of the Leisure Home Network undergoes a series of stringent checks before being considered. Every Home goes through a rigorous 100 point checklist that involves upgrades to every aspect from tasteful interiors to landscaping, from staffing and their training to technology deployment, to deployment of our processes and methods.

Where do you see yourself five years down the road?
The goal is to have over 2000 homes managed and branded by SaffronStays in the next 5-7 years. We would like to extend operations across the entire country, and abroad, without compromising on the quality of experience offered. The idea is to follow the loyal Guest and their Families, wherever they travel. So whether it a weekend drive from Mumbai, or it is a weekend flight away to Bali; we would like to offer the same Indian hospitality to our Guests across the world, in curated villas and homes. We would also be soon entering the hi-end urban home segment, differentiated from the sterile serviced apartments, in which we would offer the entire home to families wanting privacy and exclusivity. Also, while this is the inaugural year for India’s Most Memorable Vacation Home Awards, we hope to continue it year on year and build a strong brand property.
