Hailing from a small town in Punjab, Vijayant Bansal is the scion of a renowned family of industrialists and educationists. The family ventured into the education sector as a philanthropic and established 8 colleges, 1 school and a polytechnic in a span of 15 years. Bansal entered the family businesses after a management degree from Bradford UK infusing fresh thinking & innovation into the traditional mindsets and imparting a new lease of life to them. He took the education business to newer heights by launching a state of the art K12 World School in Chandigarh. In the year 2017, he conceptualized a unique philanthropic educational venture and laid the foundation of the World University of Design (WUD) - India’s first and only university based in Delhi NCR dedicated to education in the creative domain.

He holds a post-graduation degree in management and has held various management positions in diverse sectors like banking, cooperative banking, hospitality, consulting, retail and steel. In conversation with Dominic Rebello, Vijayant speaks about the reasons on lauching a unique concept like a design university and his focus towards this cause while upholding global standards of design education.

What is the main idea behind World Design University?
Among the new fields of studies, Sciences, Commerce, Humanities, Engineering & Technology, and Management education had their run. Certain fields of studies like art and design existed since long yet they could not expand for want of demand for employment in production and distribution of goods and services, but that scenario has drastically transformed now. Today design is all around us; physical spaces, virtual spaces, electronic devices, mechanical devices, apparels and accessories, all are designed to fulfill our specific needs more efficiently than ever, by drawing upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning. Owing to the growing awareness and design consciousness among people, design is often the differentiator when it comes to making a purchase decision, thus creating a tremendous scope for the Design Industry to thrive in India. This is resulting in creation of a number of job opportunities for students holding a degree in design. This is where we come in to picture bolstering design aspirants with the finest education to become success design professionals.

How are you different from others?
In a globally competitive world, it is the quality of design that has a significant impact on the overall experience and usability of the products and services created. There are only a handful of institutions in India addressing this need and catering to this field of knowledge and practice. We are India's first and only design university, focusing completely towards addressing the cause while upholding global standards of design education.

What are the latest design education trends?
Education is a necessary part of our modern society and it is facing drastic changes because of emerging competition and technological innovations. Every student is unique and has their own strengths and weaknesses and the diversity in education gives them new challenges every day. Experiential learning - Giving students an opportunity to choose their learning setting, learning new techniques, access to excellent facilities and experiential workshops which are supported by an advance range of technology is the need of the hour for students to have firsthand experience that cannot be achieved in any other way.

Your vision for the University?
Our visionary approach to design education is based on creating teaching and learning practices that spark a desire for rich, intercultural and transdisciplinary dialogue; along with a mandate to provide students with innovative learning and wholesome practical experience.

Where do you see yourself five years down the road?
India has a fast growing digital industry and there is a boom right now. The need for the research data base and policy intervention is increasing. The literature and books on Indian art and design are mostly written by the outsiders. We will emerge as a centre of excellence where all this can incubate, alongside regular teaching. Students will get the opportunity in the creative industries like architecture, building, spaces, residential, commercial, designing visual arts — arts, painting and architecture.
