The Race Is On

With the haul of good films in the year gone by, what does the new year hold for the audience?

The first week of the year usually does not have a noteworthy Hindi film release, because of the superstition that it’s an unlucky date for the box-office. But the second week of 2019 has a profusion of films hitting the screens—eleven at last count. Of these, The Accidental Prime Minister (about former PM Dr Manmohan Singh), Uri (about the surgical strike) and Rangeela Raja have all collected controversies, two for political reasons and the last for a censor hold-up.

The following week, has Arshad Warsi-starrer, about a man who marries and cons several women. The Republic Day weekend is clogged with Cheat India, the Emran Hashmi starrer about the ills of the education system, Manikarnika—The Queen of Jhansi, with Kangana Ranaut playing the warrior queen, and Thackeray, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing the Shiv Sena leader. Three of these films have been in the news for various reasons—the first because the director objected to changed and exited, the other because Ranaut took over the project amidst walk-outs by actors and the last, well, because of the very subject.

In February, the films to look forward to are Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga, in which Anil Kapoor and his daughter Sonam star together for the first time; then there’s dacoit drama Sonchiriya with Sushant Singh Rajput in need of a hit alongside Manoj Bajpayee and Bhumi Pedenekar followed by Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, starring man of the season Ranveer Singh opposite Alia Bhatt and a not-yet publicized, Ravi The Untold Story about the soldier who saved 157 lives at the Taj Mahal Hotel, during the 26/11 attacks.

Total Dhamaal, next in the star-studded franchise will be out to please fans of this brand of loud comedy; Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, a romantic thriller with Arjun Kapoor and Parineeta Chopra will hopefully give the two stars a much-needed hit. Kartik Aryan and Kriti Sanon star in Luka Chhupi and Ajay Devgn is in a romantic movie for change, with Tabu and Rakul Preet Singh as the leading ladies; Rajshri Productions Hum Chaar with new faces is listed for release; Sujoy Ghosh’s Badla with a star cast like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu is scheduled for March, and should have started making waves already.

Mere Pyare Prime Minister is about a kid wanting to build a toilet; Kesari is a huge historical on the Battle of Sargarhi, with Akshay Kumar leading the cast; a thriller Romeo Akbar Walter, starring John Abraham starrer, Mental Hai Kya with Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao, and Salman Khan’s production The Notebook, with newcomers Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan Bahl complete the line-up of films for the first quarter. There will be more smaller films coming out too in filling in gaps in the multiplexes.

Audience, as always, will look for entertainment and pleasant surprises.
