With his chartbusting retro-songs like  ‘Awaara Hoon’ and his Chaplinesque screen-charisma, the late ‘showman ‘ Raj Kapoor  became a household name among music-savvy Russians. Decades later he was followed by dusky dude Mithun Chakraborty who with his ‘Disco Dancer’ swinging,  had the Russian girls swooning over him. Currently, its Bollywood ‘dream-girl’ Hema Malini who has emerged the  iconic ‘dance-diva’ among the Russians and Georgians.

Besides being a diligent M.P. monitoring the welfare of her Mathura constituency, the dynamic danseuse-actress-singer Hema Malini has collaborated with Georgia’s popular ballet dance group ‘Sukhishvilli’. A awe-inspiring mega-dance festival titled ‘Synergy’  is being hosted this evening, (08th Sept),  in the city under the aegis of ‘Jaya Smriti’ which is dedicated to Malini’s ‘late’ mother Jaya Chakravarthy.

“The spectacular  performances include  innovative fusion-blend of high-energy Georgian dance forms along with popular Indian dance forms like Bharata Natyam, Kathak and (Manipuri) Pung Cholom,” enthuses ‘cultural ambassador’ Hema, who has invited a galaxy of dignitaries including her legendary husband Dharmendra for today’s event. On being quizzed whether she wishes to take up a Ministry portfolio, the  exuberant ‘Basanti’ (of ‘Sholay’) countered. “It’s not in my nature and I don’t aspire to become a Minister. Because I don’t think I am cut out for it.

And then I need enough time to also devote to my cultural and dance mission.”  Why has the ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ actress not been signing new Hindi movies... “ Frankly I feel that my acting phase is over . However, if there is a great script-a challenging role like ‘Baghban (2003)’  I am always open,” she signs off.
