A Feast Of Films

The 20th edition of the film festival organized by the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI) will begin at multiple venues in Mumbai from October 25 and continue till November 1.

From a glittering international list are films like Black Kkklansmen by Spike Lee, that won the Cannes Grand Prix thus year; Alfonso Cuaron’s epic Roma, the ever-popular Coen Brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Poland’s entry to the Oscars, Cold War by Pawel Pawliskowski, The Wild Pear Tree by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, which is Turkey’s entry to the Oscars; Ciro Guerra’s Birds Of Passage is Columbia’s entry to the Oscars.

Three Faces by Iranian filmmaker Jafer Panahi, banned from making films, but still manging to work guerilla style is on the schedule, there’s Zhang Yimou’s Shadow, Paul Schraer’s First Reformed, Gus Van Sant’s Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot, Olivier Assayas’s Double Lives, Peter Strickland’s horror mystery In Fabric, Lee Chang Dong’s Burning, Steve McQueen’s thriller Widows, Shoplifters by Hirokazu Kore-eda are among other must-see films.

There are many good Indian films too from the various regions. Vasan Bala’s Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota is the much-acclaimed opening film; Rima Das’s Bulbul Can Sing, after her award-winning, Oscar entry Village Rockstars is a top choice.There are festival circuit favourites, like Mehsampur, by new director Kabir Singh Chowdhry, about the assassinated Punjabi film singer, Amar Singh Chamkila. Balekampaby Ere Gowda, writer of the award-winning Tithi, making his directorial debut; Soni by Ivan Ayr are worth ticking on the list.

People will be discussing, breathing and sleeping films for the next few days as part of the festival experience.
