Situated in Mumbai’s bustling, heritage Fort area on Maharshi Dadhichi Marg, The J B Petit High School for Girls is recognized today as one of the finest educational institutions in the city. The school has continuously evolved over its 150 years of existence, and continues to do so. What has remained the same however, is the commitment to a holistic system of education aimed at fostering self confidence and self worth in every student, enabling them to realize success in school and beyond.
Started in 1860 by a dynamic and far-sighted Englishwoman, Ms. Prescott, the school was originally called Miss Prescott’s Fort Christian School. Thanks to munificent donations from city philanthropist Premchand Roychand, a new school building was constructed; and in 1878, it was renamed the Frere Fletcher School.
In 1915, Mr. Jehangir Bomanji Petit, a scion of a prominent family of Parsi philanthropists, took over the running of the school. In 1946, a Board of Trustees was set up, comprising eminent individuals from different walks of life who took over the stewardship of the school.
Through the following decades, and under the able guidance and leadership of dynamic Principals, the school has flourished and established a reputation as a premier educational institution that has continued to maintain its distinctive legacy of excellence in education.
The focus of the school’s activities is not on academics alone but just as importantly, on the ‘development of the whole child’ with an emphasis on innovative and creative methodologies of teaching and learning. Under the current leadership of Principal Benaifer P Kutar, this tradition of a well rounded education continues to define the school.
J B Petit today comprises a fascinating mosaic of students and teachers. This diversity is valued and is seen as a source of strength, since it enriches the socio-cultural life of the school. The staff although so varied, is joined by one strong unbreakable bond - a desire to provide a stellar education to the students in an environment of creativity, freedom and joy.
The ethos of the school is underpinned by an educational philosophy that reflects its core values.
It honors individuality, embraces diversity and promotes leadership and service, preparing students to take their place as responsible and confident global citizens. The comprehensive academic programme is infused with a global perspective that fosters awareness, sensitivity and engagement with issues beyond the school.
Boasting of a history that spans several decades, The J B Petit High School for Girls has numerous characteristics and splendid features which ensure that it garners a loyal stronghold of supporters among students, parents, alumnae and the wider community.
