If you want a quick holiday without going too far, head for the historical Vasai fort and fishing village

If you are thinking of a holiday around Mumbai, think no further than Vasai. It's a cute little town which is basically divided into Vasai East and Vasai West by the railway line cutting across it. The East is predominantly industrial while the west is mostly residential and commercial.

Very well connected by the suburban Western Railway, all nooks and corners of Vasai are accessible by thousands of auto-rickshaws. While there are malls, fashion, electronics, jewellery, expensive watches like Rado, wine shops and so on, as there are in Mumbai, what sets it apart is its historical village with Vasai fort as the main attraction.

It's a beautiful sprawling fort which depicts life as it was in 1500 A.D. It is used every day with hundreds of walkers strolling through the road leading to the creek. From there you can see  Mira - Bhayandar, separated by the water body. Vasai is worth visiting just for its beautiful fort and the fishing village. And don't miss out on its seaside restaurants serving super-fresh seafood with beer and authentic Kerala and Maharashtrian restaurants!

If you have some spare time you could visit the beautiful Tungareshwar Temple  and Hike trail right at the entry to Vasai from the Highway.

HOW TO GET THERE

  • By train, if you are travelling from Mumbai, take the Western Railway route via Dadar / Andheri and board a Virar bound local train.
  • Road access from Mumbai involves taking the Western Express Highway and driving straight into the Gujarat-Ahmedabad Highway. It takes approximately one hour driving from Borivali.
  • From Thane or Vashi, take the Ghodbunder road to join the Gujarat-Ahmedabad Highway. Vasai is around 40 km from Thane.
  • From Kalyan/Dombivali, use the Bhiwandi bypass and take the Anjoor phata route at Bhiwandi, before heading straight down to the Gujarat Ahmedabad Highway.
