Store Review: Translate

There’s something about handlooms and traditional arts of textiles that captivate our fashion senses. Pearl Mathias walks into Translate at Kala Ghoda and is charmed by the intricacies of Ikat

We shifted base to the organic world of fashion as soon as sustainable clothing started to make waves, and now, adding style to sustainable fabric is Translate, a concept apparel and home textile design company that brings you stylish outfits and accessories in a traditional light. But, recent times have seen a steady rise in brands such as these in the city, and there has been growing awareness of artisanal fabrics and processes. So, what makes the Translate brand stand out?

Co-founded in 2010 by entrepreneur duo Vinita and Vikas Passary, and with textile artist Chandrashekar MV brought on board, the company empowers regional Ikat artisans and transforms traditional hand-loom weaving methods to produce contemporary outfits and home accessories. Having set up shop in Hyderabad, Delhi, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, the team ventures into the design district of the city, Kala Ghoda, to reintroduce Pochampally Ikat weaves.

More than 15 families of weavers work with the brand to experiment with new designs and patterns, making every product that lines the shelves of the store unique. Reviving the age-old traditional art of Ikat, Translate primarily focuses on warp, weft and double Ikat, which is almost on the brink of extinction.

Translate’s latest collection comprises of garments reflecting the scale of their workmanship with big and bold, and even fine Ikats, with pleasing forms and colour. The colour palette includes aubergines, charcoals and olives in addition to the existing colour palette of midnight blue and ruby. The highlight of this collection is the introduction of microspin yarn in its weaving.

Walking through the store, you’ll catch sight of flowy kurtas, trendy tops and tunics, comfort-inducing dresses, wide-legged trousers, dainty stoles and minimalistic home décor accessories.

We loved that the subdued hues made use of in the clothing filled the space, and had our eye on a few pieces that we bookmarked as ideal clothing for when the summer hits.

“We are committed to revive and transform this beautiful art of Ikat, an ancient craft with unrelenting attention to quality and detail. We wish to reach out to a wider audience who share the same passion in hand-woven textiles and are willing to support the craft by choosing to wear them,” say the founders.

What makes Translate stand out in a neighbourhood ripe with clothing stores is the subtle beauty that emerges through their art as well as their aim of empowering artisans who are skilled beyond measure. Find out more about the brand and their offerings by visiting their website www.ikatindia.com, but don’t give their quaint little store a miss, especially if you’re prepping your wardrobe for the season.
