Music composer Rahul Ranade presents an ode to four iconic music maestros

Ace Music Composer Rahul Ranade presents his new ambitious venture, ‘The Bengal Tigers’,  an ode to four iconic music composers of Indian film music—Hemant Kumar, Salil Chowdhary, Sachin Dev Burman, and Rahul Dev Burman, in an orchestra format. However, the word ‘orchestra’, has gained an undignified reputation over the years and is usually connected with mundane musical drills at festivals. Rahul is all set to break the norm with this innovative show. “The basic issue with ‘orchestra’ shows, is that they are disorganised and are haphazard. With Bengal Tigers, I intend to change that,” he says.

Rahul intends to bring discipline to this format. “Why do people go to an orchestra show when they can listen to pre-recorded tracks? Because it’s a live experience, with the musicians and instruments,” he explains. “Unlike classical music, film music has to stick to the original. Therefore, it is our responsibility to make the show aesthetically engaging to the audience. I am not very fond of the term ‘compere’. I choose to address him as the ‘host’ of the show. In this show the host, well-known actor Sumeet Raghavan, will build a narrative about the four legends.”

The show will feature some of the best talent in the music industry—Shailaja Subramanian, Anindita Paul, Adish Telang and Hrishikesh Ranade on vocals and a troupe of 15 musicians on melody and percussion instruments, conducted by Kamlesh Bhadkamkar. “My team is the biggest asset. They know their work bang-on,” he says.

The legendary singer Asha Bhosle is expected to be present and while there is no confirmation about whether she will sing, she is expected to speak about her experiences with each of the four legends. “Asha tai is one of the few living legends who has worked with all four of them. Therefore, beyond her blessed presence, her sharing experiences will make the show interesting,” Rahul says.

He adds: “Being a musician myself, through the process of this show, I went through a minor inferiority complex, wondering if I or, for that matter, any of the music composers of this generation or the next will have the kind of creativity that these icons had.”
