From the era of transistors to the age of digital music, Lata Mangeshkar’s songs continue to be loved, says Tanmaya Vyas

A voice that has expressed a myriad emotions for over seven decades, Lata Mangeshkar enters her 90th year. From the era of transistors to the age of digital music, Lata Mangeshkar’s songs continue to remain loved. Born to the theatre legend Master Dinanath Mangeshkar, Lata is the eldest among the five siblings—Asha, Usha, Meena and Hridaynath Mangeshkar, all blessed with tremendous musical talent.

She started singing publicly at the tender age of 13 and ever since then has sung in over 36 languages and for actresses ranging from Meena Kumari to Sneha Ullal. Ghazals, Classical music-based songs, love duets, folk songs, devotional songs, mujras, cabarets—she has explored and mastered every genre.

She also composed music under the pseudonym Anandghan, primarily for Marathi films and started a film production company and produced the movie Lekin. The celebrated list of awards and honours received by the legend is long. Conferred upon with the highest civilian award of Bharat Ratna, she is also the one of the few Indians to be a recipient of Highest Civilian Award of France- Officer of the French Legion of Honour.

At a recent event held in Mumbai, her sister and legendary singer Asha Bhosale, wished her elder sister in advance, by singing Tum Jiyo Haazro Saal and said that there can be only one Lata Mangeshkar and that no one can match Lata Didi’s supreme singing. She also said that singers of today’s generation are amazing and flawless but ‘Lata Didi’s voice is divine’. Some other singers shared their thoughts and wishes for the living legend.

Udit Narayan

What can I say about the living legend? I am very blessed to have sung some of the finest songs of my career with her. Be it Tu mere Samne from Darr or all the songs from Dil Toh Pagal and Diwale Dulhania Le Jayenge—each song holds a special place in my heart. In many centuries do we get an artiste like her? She is the embodiment of Maa Saraswati for all of us.  I wish her a long, happy and healthy life.

Kavita Seth

I remember as a kid I used to take a transistor with me around my house, so I could always listen to Lata ji’s songs. The list of my favourite songs sung by her is long, but Lag Ja Galey stays my absolute favourite. Her dedication and respect towards music is irreplaceable. Wish the legend a very happy birthday!

Shalmali Kholgade

Happiest birthday to the nightingale of India—Lataji. Although I can be deemed a late bloomer as far as my association with Hindi film music goes, the influence Didi has had on how I listen to vocal deliveries in songs, is something I will always be grateful for. She is a legend, and will always be one.

Amit Trivedi

First of all wishing her a wonderful birthday! What can I say about her? She is the greatest we have in India. All the songs she has sung still now have been loved by the audiences and that says a lot. If asked to choose one of her best songs, it’s very difficult, as each and every song she has sung is different but equally good.

Harshdeep Kaur

I’ve grown up listening to Lata Ji’s songs. Her song Mera dil ye pukare aaja was my favourite and I used to sing this song at various singing competitions in school. It is very tough to choose favourite songs from the list of songs sung by her as all her songs are brilliant. But I really love her songs from the film Henna. Lata ji is truly a nightingale. Her voice, singing, expression, pronunciation, throw of voice, everything is just perfect.  I’m lucky that once I got an opportunity to speak to her and she praised me for my rendition of Ik Onkar from Rang De Basanti. This was like a dream come true. I wish the legend a very happy birthday and hope she keeps inspiring us.
