Food Review The Nutcracker

If you love everything eggetarian and vegetarian, and wish to indulge in sumptuous food, then The Nutcracker in Bandra is the place to look out for, says Sunny Rodricks after paying the popular café a visit

Tucked away in the by-lanes of Bandra, somewhere between Chaayos and Salt Water Café, lies the beautiful and cosy place called The Nutcracker. A home-style café that brings to Bandra delicious comfort food designed around eggetarian and vegetarian recipes, The Nutcracker offers the warmth of a home with a touch of quirkiness.

We decided to start with their eggetarian options and ordered the Akuri (Rs 215) and Eggs Kejriwal (Rs 345). The Iranian style scrambled eggs came with pav and had a hint of spice; we loved that the well cooked eggs were served piping hot and licked the plate clean. The Eggs Kejriwal was a melt-in-the-mouth combination of toast, mushroom, green chilli and a sunny side up egg with three layers of cheese, and we went nom nom over its crunchiness.

In between the eating, we soaked in the goodness of the shakes and smoothies. The Breakfast in a Bottle (Rs 230) and the Salted Caramel Banana Smoothie (Rs 230) were served freezing cold and we gulped them down in no time. The classic Hot Chocolate (Rs 280) wasn’t quite the treat we hoped for and didn’t suit our palate. Amidst the munching and gulping, we needed some refreshment and the coolers came to our rescue. Both the Fresh Mint Lemonade (Rs 160) and the Fresh Lemongrass Lemonade (Rs 165) were cooling and prepared us for further gorging.

For our meal, we opted for the Asian Salad (Rs 345), Cottage Cheese Burger (Rs 420) and Nutty Spaghetti (Rs 410). The salad was a combination of everything vegetable and was topped with red chilli lemon garlic dressing. The burger, on the other hand, was a monstrous offering served hot, but sadly was very dry. We had a hard time finishing it. To our rescue came the light spaghetti, which is also available in a Jain option, is by far the best dish that we sampled at The Nutcracker.

We ordered the Warm Goey Chocolate Cake (Rs 310), which was an amalgamation of dark chocolate and vanilla ice cream. The hot dish was so delicious that we ordered a second helping! On the recommendation of the owner, we went for their signature dessert, The 7 Layer Cookie (Rs 330), which was a melt-in-the-mouth mixture of biscuit crumble, caramel, butterscotch and Belgian chocolate, and well complemented with vanilla ice cream. We loved indulging in every bite of this heavenly dessert! A must-try if you have a liking for everything sweet and chocolaty.

The Nutcracker in Bandra makes a lasting impression on our minds. Frequented by hipsters, families and couples, it comes as a welcome addition to the array of cafés and fine-dine restaurants that Bandra has to offer. From the seating arrangements to the food and service, we loved everything about it.
