Singapore-based Shantha Ratii Initiatives brings the works of Maharaja Swati Thirunal of Travancore to Mumbai in three different dance styles

After a successful run in Singapore in September 2017, Shantha Ratii Initiatives (SRI) Singapore, a dance-theatre company, brings Swati Sougandhikam to National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai on July 8 at 6:30pm.

The inspiring works of Maharaja Swati Thirunal of Travancore, Kerala, will be performed in three dance styles: Bharatanatyam (Rama Vaidyanathan), Mohiniyattam (Gopika Varma) and Kuchipudi (Shantha Ratii), with narration in English.

Maharaja was a linguist and composer par excellence, and some of his works in Hindi, Sanskrit, Malayalam and other languages will be brought to life by these three foremost artistes of each genre. The performance will take you back to the 19th century court of the Maharaja, says Shantha.

“Here we hope to capture the various moods, poetic excellence and language nuances in one evening, through different dance styles—Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam and Kuchipudi. Each style will highlight the whole gamut of emotions and variety of situations reflecting the heroines or Nayikas in Indian literature and thought trasdition ranging from the playfulness and reverent to the agonies of separation and ecstasy of union. Expressions of these universal emotions lie at the core of these traditional dance forms.”

Though based on traditional lyrics and music, this NCPA-Shantha Ratii initiative will be presented with fresh interpretations and new perspectives, making it relevant to a modern audience, Shantha adds.

When July 8, 6.30 p.m.
