Food Review: The Urban Foundry

Its delightful menu means that you just have to put The Urban Foundry on your list of intriguing restaurants in the city to visit, says Anindra Siqueira

Clean flavours, unique combinations. That’s how we’d describe The Urban Foundry in Colaba. Transposed and synthesised from its sister outlet in Pune, this one has added a few new options to the menu (mainly the bar menu), with an aim to capture the flavour of the city. And it does that marvelously!

THE MOULD

We must admit that when we initially looked at the menu, we were a bit confused. It didn’t seem to follow a theme, and the dish names, spelled out in a mix of Hindi, English and Hinglish, put us off. But, things are simple… with Indian dishes on left hand pages and Asian ones on the right. Simple enough? And their mash-ups and fusions are kept to a minimum, which means you get to enjoy great-tasting morsels with none of the fancy, over-the-top dishes you generally see.

FROM THE FURNACE

A few options caught our eye immediately and we savoured almost everything that we sampled on the night.

Although the Malai Broccoli Dumplings were soft and had a delightful flavour (definitely a unique serving of dumplings!), the Asian Patrani Wrapped Chicken was so unique that we instantly loved it! Tiny pieces of succulent chicken wrapped in banana leaf cones and steamed with gentle spices, the dish is definitely one to savour. We also enjoyed the freshness and flavour of the Tandoori Mustard Sea Bass, which was lightly barbecued with just a hint of mustard coming through. And, although the Cheese and Mutton Boti Kebab was soft and tasty, it didn’t have the kind of flavour other dishes did.

TODDLERS ON THE NIGHT

Since neither my dining companion nor I drink, we had to make do with coolers from their Toddlers section. This might evoke images of high chairs, large bibs and loud wailing. But make no mistake, these drinks are just as delightful. The Gulaabo is a kokam concoction with black salt and mint. While I don’t particularly enjoy the flavour of mint, the drink had only hints of it. And, the Smooth N Slender, a watermelon-based drink that also has strawberry, lime and mint, makes for a refreshing sip.

ON A STRONGER NOTE

We’re told that the highlight of the bar is their unique cocktails. When they set up in the city, they added to their existing drink options, with interesting combinations fronted by unique names. While we can’t comment on the drinks, they definitely sounded like a lot of fun. The bar area is upstairs (and dining is on the lower level), which should make for a cosy evening out, whichever is your pleasure.

COOLING DOWN

For dessert, we picked The Foundry Cheesecake, a delicious thick cheesecake with thin slices of gulab jamun embedded in it. But, it was the Motichoor Sushi that turned out to be a delightful (and a rather surprising!) pick. We’re not giving anything away about this magical dessert. You’re going to have to try it yourself to believe it!

THE DIE HAS BEEN CAST

You won’t have any trouble picking something to savour, in both food and drink at The Urban Foundry. The unique flavours and inspiring mash-ups are what really stand out. It’s not overdone just to make a statement; it’s subtle, even understated. If you don’t like to experiment much, the staff will help you pick. And, it is open from noon to 1am, so you can enjoy forged delights throughout the day.
