A day full of art

Spending a day around artists is probably the best way to spend a Sunday, says Damini Kane

Once, during a drunken evening at a bar, a designer friend told me that design was everywhere, in everything around us, and the world would look alien without it. Her words came back to me as I sat through a fascinating talk by artist Garima Gupta.

I was at The Art of Illustrating Stories, a seminar by Avid Learning (an Essar initiative), held on October 27 from 10.30am to 5.00pm. A healthy audience was present, most of them artists or art-curious, like me. The speakers included the aforementioned Garima Gupta, artist and illustrator, who talked about her journey through her craft and what led her to her current study of conservation and its links to colonialism.

The second speaker, Himanshu S, associated with Bombay Underground and Dharavi Art Room, held an interactive session where the audience learnt about the zine, and were encouraged to try and make one for themselves. Zines, which work on small budgets and generally do not have a profit-motive, are self-published works of small circulation, and carry various voices not generally present in the mainstream, functioning as a tool to help people from marginalised communities to put out their own stories.

The event’s third and final speaker, Sameer Kulavoor, founder of Bombay Duck Designs, works in an “intersection between illustration, graphic design, and art”. He presented four of his projects, including BLUED Book, Parfum Sassoon, This Truck Has Got to Be Special, and A Man of the Crowd.

The Art of Illustrating Stories was a great session for those who not only are artists, but also for those who love art. It served as an insight not only into what it takes to make it in this industry, but also how one can follow their curiosity to create something beautiful.
